The Scarcity of Good Management

From an article in Fortune back in February of 2006; I don’t think things have changed much since, because the driving force of this problem is lack of training and skill:

“Talent of every sort is in short supply, but the greatest shortage of all is skilled, effective managers. Even [in China], where you can hire factory workers by the million, companies can’t find enough managers….Labor is abundant, but managers are scarce.”

Any conjectures as to why? What’s not being taught well to future managers? Some kind of character training being missed?

    What comes to my mind:
Folks don’t know how to critique each other well. Folks are busy trapped in impressing others.
Folks are afraid to confront others and instead give them passing assessments thus keeping weak performers on-board?

    Connie,

I think those are factors. Another huge one is lack of good training. So they don’t develop into management, and many who are in management are having to go by the seat of their pants (unless they embark on self study).
